A Record haul from the Internet?

An Estimated $2.5 Million was collected for Sen. Ron Paul today.  It wasn’t done through the mail or a dinner party.  It was done through the internet.

Today, Nov. 5, marks not only Paul’s best fundraising haul in a single day — more than $2.5 million by 6 p.m. EST — but online observers say it’s also the most money raised by a candidate on the Web in a single day. – Washington Post

I’m not certain that this really means anything.  It is hard to verify each contribution with checks.  I’m sure it is even harder to verify the contributions made through the internet.

One thing is for certain, Ron Paul seems to have a large grass roots system going on the internet for him.  For someone who trails quite a bit in the polls this is actually quite impressive.  It will be interesting to see how much of it actually vets and how much of it turns out to be several donations from few donors.

Either way, it is an impressive feat and will show that the internet is starting to become a viable medium.  One that candidates cannot ignore.  One that may actually become a very large part of the campaign.
