FDA Food Safety Modernization Act
Designed to protect people from food borne illnesses and chemicals, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act S.510, could have other implications as well.
One section of the act could allow the FDA to suspend manufacture of Twinkies due to the possibility of them causing serious adverse health.
Authorizes the Secretary to suspend the registration of a food facility if the food manufactured, processed, packed, or held by a facility has a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals.
Seriously, what is wrong with the existing laws on hand that we have to extend even more power to the government in order to have them regulate what we eat?
While concern about Salmonella and E coli are legitimate concerns, there are already guidelines in place and the industry involved is fairly equitable in their recall measures. This legislation will also affect the domestic producers more than those overseas.
A provision that was removed from the Act was to ban BPA products. Something that was being done voluntarily by manufactures already due to media publicity. Similar issues could also be fixed in the same fashion without government involvement and regulation.
Even though we do need protections, I believe this is one protection that isn’t absolutely necessary and just goes to complicate our lives.
