Governor Crist announces a run for the Senate.
Yes, that’s right, Governor Crist announce his run for the seat being vacated by Senator Martinez.
Crist, 52, told reporters in a Capitol news conference that the “challenges that Florida faces are not just Florida challenges. They’re national challenges.” “And as a result of that, I believe I can best serve the people of Florida, if they’re willing to allow me, as their next United States senator,”
This is great news for Republicans and not so great news for Democrats. His popularity will most assuredly get him the primary and more than likely get him the election without a strong Democrat candidate.
This will make it difficult for Representative Allen Boyd(D) should he decide to run for the Senate.
While I would normally be happy to have a strong Republican run for the Senate with a great chance of being elected. There are some concerns that Charlie Crist raises for Republicans.
Charlie Crist’s stand on the Stimulus bill, Cap-and-Trade and Health care should raise some serious flags. All of them would go to increasing the Federal Budget should he vote the way he has been acting as Governor. He would be a boon to Democrats.
I’m sure that he would support many other Republican causes but the trend for him leans more left than right.
Even so, I would rather see him run against Senator Bill Nelson rather than try to claim the vacated seat. Something that another strong Republican candidate could get. Someone such as Florida State House Speaker Marco Rubio.
