Letter from Congressman Allen Boyd (D) on Immigration
After several months, I finally received an answer to an email I sent Congressman Boyd about his stance on immigration. Apparently, it wasn’t important before. He was probably too involved in damage control from the Health Care vote.
Here is the response from Congressman Boyd’s office on my question about immigration.
Dear Mr. Kennedy:
Thank you for contacting me and sharing your thoughts on this issue. Your views are important to me as they play a key role in helping me determine the best direction for our nation and for Florida’s 2nd Congressional District.
I understand the American public’s anxiety and distress with the immigration problem that exists in our country. There is no doubt that this problem must be dealt with in an effective and responsible manner. The new laws in Arizona have brought the debate to the forefront in Washington, DC and partially in response to that the U.S. Senate leadership recently released an immigration blueprint to begin discussions on an immigration overhaul. The President has also shown his support for passing reform legislation and he has begun to reach out across the aisle to begin the negotiation process.
As you know, immigration is a very complex issue, as it is not only a homeland security issue, but a jobs issue, and sometimes, a civil rights issue. I support comprehensive immigration reform that not only increases enforcement along the border, but also addresses the very real issue of the 12 million immigrants that are already in the country. I am against amnesty and believe that those who came into the U.S. illegally must pay fees and back taxes before they are allowed to begin any citizenship process. I also agree that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to cut in front of the line in any citizenship process. Those who choose to follow the laws should be allowed to stay in line ahead of any illegal immigrants. Furthermore, I am supportive of heavier fines for American companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, because I believe that if you cut off the supply of jobs, then the temptation to break our laws would be significantly reduced.
The current situation is no doubt costing our country in more ways that one and it must be dealt with. I will remain involved in the immigration debate and I will keep your concerns in mind as I continue to work hard on our nation’s problems.
One of the things that interests me is the fact that he says he isn’t for amnesty. But the very next thing he says implies that he is.
I am against amnesty and believe that those who came into the U.S. illegally must pay fees and back taxes before they are allowed to begin any citizenship process.
Hate to say it Congressman Boyd, but paying fees and taxes before they are allowed to begin a citizenship process is actually amnesty. That is what legal immigrants do now.
Many immigrants have come here legally. By getting the proper Visas, Health checks and guarantees that they will be self supporting. It is a complete insult to those who have gone through the legal process and followed the law to come to this country legally for the Democrats and some Republicans to even consider allowing those who are here illegally to gain the same rights as those who followed the laws of our nation.
Just another reason why Congressman Boyd isn’t a blue dog Democrat. Like Charlie Crist, Allen Boyd is truly a liberal in disguise as a moderate.
