Millage rate for Escambia County falls

According to the Pensacola News Journal, the millage rate for the new budget year was driven down from 8.017 mils to 6.9755 mils.

Commissioners approved a budget of $391.6 million for 2008-09, beginning Oct. 1, and a millage rate down from 8.017 mils to 6.9755 mils or about $1.04 less per $1,000 of taxable property value.

Another welcoming reduction in taxes for area home owners. Especially in tough times.

Don’t think this is the end though. Taxes could very well jump back up a little bit next year depending on the budget requirements. County commissioners could go far to help keep this from happening by going through the budget and weeding out unneeded projects. Projects they have been rubber stamping for the last few years due to a windfall of tax income from skyrocketing property values and automatic property appriasal adjustments.

Valentino said the county budget is bloated because commissioners over the past decade have rubber stamped the tax rate and budget.
