Millage Rate reduced in Okaloosa County.
Okaloosa County School Board voted to reduce the millage rate on the 28th of July. Even with the county facing a reduced tax revenue they have heard the voices of the people who pay the taxes.
Of course, the reduction they voted on will not really amount to much but it is the thought that counts in most peoples eyes. Maybe $5 for most homeowners. The fact that they did not increase the rates bodes well for taxpayers but not so well for the schools.
The schools will need to rethink their budgets. Maybe delay some capital outlay projects. It would be really nice if they wouldn’t pay 6 1/2 figures to athletic directors for high schools. More than most, if not all, principals. Maybe then they could then afford all of the administrators and helpers they are planning to layoff.
If they had voted for a tax increase they would have faced a near revolt from the homeowners. Even if it was small. As it was, the tax cut isn’t much more than a token tax cut that really shouldn’t have much affect on the school budgets and almost no affect on homeowners.
