MSBU Approved
A very controversial Municipal Services Benefit Unit was approved by the county commissioners in Okaloosa county this week.
There had been quite a few people opposed to the new tax to help pay for beach restoration. Many claimed that the state should be the ones footing the bill. Some claimed it was an unfair burden on homes by excluding the large condos on the gulf.
What a lot of those who were opposed to it fail to realize is that they are not paying the entire amount.
The MSBU will pay about 24 percent of the roughly $12.35 million project on Okaloosa Island and 36 percent of the $13.4 million price tag in Destin. – NW Florida Daily News
While this might sound like quite a bit. It really is not all that much. The burden on homeowners could have been less if they had included individual rooms from the condos on the gulf.
The reason this has even come up is because many people in the state have voiced their displeasure at learning that the state and federal government had planned on restoring private beaches. To the tune of millions of dollars. Something that the public does not get a benefit from.
The MSBU is probably a good thing. It will help pay for the restoration of our beaches. It is not going to pay the entire bill but we should not expect that every household should pay for beach front that they do not use. The only gripe that could possibly be made about the MSBU is it did not fairly include the condo owners.
