Sen. Bill Nelson Courting the Syrians?

Senator Bill Nelson went to Syria.  Yes, that is right.  He went to Syria to ask them to help us leave Iraq.

Nelson, a member of the Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees and an incoming member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, acknowledged that the State Department wasn’t happy with his decision to meet with the Syrian president to discuss whether the country could help the United States find a way out of Iraq.  – The Mercury News

I thought I was pretty happy with Senator Nelson and his record of supporting the troops and the panhandle of Florida.  But after today I am not so sure any more.

Sure, going to Iraq was a mistake to begin with but courting Syria to help us “get out” of Iraq as suggested by the Iraq Study Group is just insane.  Neither Syria nor Iran have any interest in helping us unless it furthers their image in the Islamic community.  It has nothing to do with stability of Iraq unless it is in their image.

Syria has no desire to work with us to accomplish anything in Iraq.  They are too busy trying to help Hamas and Hezbollah destroy Isreal.  Of course, if we volunteer to leave Iraq they will gladly step in and attempt to set up a government of their own fashion.

With all of the human rights abuses and assassinations that Syria supports it is appalling that a Senator from Northwest Florida would even consider working with Syria.  Especially with the large number of military members in his district.  The fact that he is on the Senate Armed Services, Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees makes me wonder if it is even worth having him as our Senator.

The fact that he hopes to be followed by the likes of Senator John Kerry, an ardent anti military, anti war senator.  It kind of completely upends my opinion of Senator Nelson.

Unfortunately, it will be six years before we can find a replacement.  With the attitudes he has been showing about the military lately, let us hope we can find someone to oppose him and be elected the next time around.
