Senator Martinez(R) to quit after this term.

Citing reasons of family, Senator Mel Martinez (R) has decided to call it quits after his term is up in 2010. This has Republicans scrambling to find someone to run and Democrats to feel like they have a chance to take another seat from the Republicans.

When asked about possibly running for the seat being vacated by Senator Martinez, Jeb Bush, former Florida Governor, said he is interested in the possibility of running for the open seat. Attorney General Bill McCollum, whom ran against Martinez, has expressed an intent to run for the position as well.

On the Democrat side, Congressman Allen Boyd(D) is eyeing a possible run for the seat that Senator Martinez intends to vacate.

“I have been considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2010, prior to Sen. Martinez’s announcement today,” Boyd said in a news release. “I will continue to discuss the race with state and national party leaders and with my supporters in North Florida and throughout the state. – NWF Daily News

If Boyd does run, it could mean that his congressional seat would be up for grabs as well.

It will be interesting to see who the actual candidates will be once the campaigning starts for the election being held in two years.
