The Eglish Language is Dead in South Florida?
It has been a disturbing trend in recent years that the southern part of Florida, in and around Miami, is turning predominately Spanish speaking. More and more people whose primary language is English are leaving the Miami area for more hospitable areas further north.
“The Anglo population is leaving,” said Juan Clark, a sociology professor at Miami Dade College. “One of the reactions is to emigrate toward the north. They resent the fact that (an American) has to learn Spanish in order to have advantages to work. If one doesn’t speak Spanish, it’s a disadvantage.” – AP
Frustration is growing with non-immigrants as growing numbers of immigrants migrate to Miami’s Latino friendly communities. Living and doing business in south Florida increasingly requires one to learn and speak Spanish fluently.
It also places a large burden on state and local governments in the area. Local governments need even more bi-lingual employees in all areas of government in order to maintain services.
This also is a big draw for illegal immigrants. A friendly place to migrate to in an unwelcome environment. Many are probably moving from the more hostile areas of north Florida to a more comfortable community in south Florida. Increasing the burden on social services in those areas.
Immigrant assimilation is continuing to be a problem in south Florida. Especially when conditions such as the ones in Miami arise. Even more so when it is bolstered by illegal immigration.
The Florida legislature needs to work on and pass tougher laws against employing people without verifying their qualifications to work. Requiring employers to check for valid drivers licenses and Social Security Numbers(SSN) should be the first step and should be quickly passed.
Checking for both of those is not a violation of anyones rights. It should be required to be employed. It will help cut down on, not only illegal immigration, but fraud and identity theft. Punish the employers who blatantly violate the law more harshly as well. Make it not profitable to hire illegal immigrants.
Require immigrants to learn English and not print documents in Spanish or other languages just to make it easier.
The more that immigrants assimilate into our society without creating their own within our society the better off we will be in the long run as a State and Country.
