US turning into a Monarchy?

It almost seems as if Congress is turning into family run government. A Feudal System per se.

More and more seats are being sought by relatives in the cases of retirements and moving to better jobs.

Senator Hilary Clinton’s(D) seat is being sought after by the daughter of a president and the niece of two senators, Caroline Kennedy. Senator Joe Biden(D) is pushing to have his sun seated in the position he is vacating. Jesse Jackson Jr is being looked at for filling Senator Obama’s(D) vacant seat.

And I am not the only one noticing this trend. Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air has also noticed this trend towards dynastic government.

The wealthiest people come from hereditary wealth. Those candidates will begin holding family seats once ensconced, as political parties will want to ensure that the seats remain secure. That will transform the Senate into an American House of Lords, as Mahtesian puts it, probably within a couple more generations.

And it isn’t just Democrats doing this. Republicans are increasingly doing this as well. The best known example in the Republican Party is the Bush Family. Two Presidents and a couple of Governors. Possibly a Senator as well if things go well for Jeb Bush in 2010.

It is sad to think that the only way you will have any chance of being elected to office with one of the two parties is to be filthy rich now. Or to be part of a family who has ties in the political industry.

Are we heading down that road? The road to political inheritance? To a elected monarchy?

Is buying a seat in our political process now the norm for candidates? Recent events brought to like for Senator Obama’s seat by Governor Blagojevichs attempt at auctioning off the position to the highest bidder brings this into a serious question.

We should all be worried about this. Seems like we have just swapped one corruption for another corruption.
