Wind power coming to North West Florida?

That is an idea that is being seriously considered by Gulf Power and Santa Rosa County.

Santa Rosa County commissioners unanimously approved a partnership with Gulf Power on Thursday to allow the electric utility to install a 196-foot-tall meteorological tower on the beach to gather wind data. The data collected during the one-year study will be used to determine whether large wind turbines could be installed on the beach to generate electricity. – NWF Daily News

While this study goes on for a year or two, Gulf Power may want to consider contacting the Air Force in the area and finding out if they have the data they need. That might save a considerable amount of time and money in determining viability of this project.

The only draw backs to the Wind Generators can be found in aesthetics and some clean up associated with maintenance of the generator.

If the project proves successful, there may be more Wind Generators in the area.

Gulf Power also will use the wind testing to see whether results on Navarre Beach could also be applied in Okaloosa and Walton counties, and the rest of its service area.

Bringing alternative energy to this area is also a great idea. It should have happened years ago. But thanks to a renewed push by Governor Christ, alternative energy is being considered with a greater importance than in previous years.

There is also ample sunlight in the area. How long will it be before someone decides to build a solar farm as well?
