Big shocker here. Via Politico, Senator Martinez will not be returning after the August recess. Pretty much means he has quit completely.

There is going to be lots of speculation about who Governor Crist will appoint to the seat now. Especially since Crist will be running for the seat when it comes up for election. He will most certainly not pick Mark Rubio since that would be his main competition and wouldn’t want Mark Rubio to gain some political capital. And Governor Crist certainly won’t put himself in the seat.

Ed Morrisey over at HotAir believes Governor Crist may appoint Jeb Bush. Though there is rumor that former Governor Bob Martinez may be appointed as well. Make sure to go read what Ed has to say.

It is going to be very interesting the next couple of months in regards to this open seat.

Personally, I’m not all that saddened that Senator Martinez is quitting early. He hasn’t done much to help the Republican cause or further Florida’s interests in my opinion.
